For many of us, a New Year means a fresh start — and a fresh batch of New Year’s resolutions. Wanting to make positive changes in your life is certainly to be applauded, but it’s also easy to make overly ambitious resolutions that ultimately don’t stick.
But just 8% of people actually achieve their New Year’s resolutions. That’s not very encouraging, is it?
That’s why your resolutions should revolve around healthy lifestyle changes.
That way, you can set realistic goals and planning simple, but effective, changes and stay on track. Here are simple changes you can make that will produce long-lasting results.
1. WALK MORE
By now, you’ve probably heard about the health benefits of walking 10,000 steps a day. Walking is easy on your joints, it can be done practically anywhere, it helps with weight loss, and you can do it alone or with friends.
While reaching 10,000 steps may seem daunting, there are ways that you can add extra steps into your daily routine – such as parking further from your office, walking to nearby stores, or as some experts advise, walking briskly for five minutes after every hour of sitting.
2. GET MORE SLEEP
Now this is a lifestyle change we can get excited about! Not getting enough sleep ranks up there with a sedentary lifestyle when it comes to health hazards.
Nearly one-third of American adults are sleep-depriving, getting less than six hours of Z’s a night, according to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention.
With more sleep, you’ll feel better the next day and have the energy to exercise. In addition, getting a good night’s rest helps reduce snack cravings and motivates you to eat well.
3. DRINK MORE WATER
Let’s face it, it can seem like an uphill climb when it comes to drinking the oft-recommended eight glasses of water a day. But remember that fresh fruits and vegetables are packed with water and help you get the liquid you need. Drinking a glass of water before each meal will help your body to function properly and lessen your hunger.
And, if you are working out, staying hydrated is even more important.
4. CHANGE HOW YOU FILL YOUR PLATE
Most people fill their plates in a certain way:
1) Piling on the carbs
2) Adding some protein
3) Fitting in vegetables in what other space is remaining.
However, nutrition experts say you should fill it in reverse order from what’s typical. Fill half of your plate with vegetables, then divide the remaining half between carbs and protein. Always keep portion size in mind. This free tools, ChooseMyPlate.com, can help!
5. DON’T FORCE YOURSELF TO DO WORKOUTS YOU HATE
There’s no sense forcing yourself to do an exercise routine you can’t stand. The more dreadful it is, the more likely you are to give it up altogether. Pick a routine that you enjoy, that motivates you, and that will become a habit.
For example, if you enjoy being outdoors, take up hiking or cycling. If you love to dance, try out a group fitness class, like Zumba.
6. BE REALISTIC
Setting hard-to-reach goals can be a setup for failure. It’s easier to complete a series of mini-goals — while adding new ones along the way — than trying to reach one that is tucked away on Mt. Everest.
Remember, focus on making lifestyle changes NOT resolutions.
